Classroom Management

Learners meet weekly to hold a spelling bee. Here is the recommended plan for classroom management.

Weekly Preparation
  • Login at TEARN.
  • Prepare flash cards for the words from the past week using the do-flash worksheet. Alternatively, assign this task to a student and let the student lead the spelling bee for the coming week.
  • Optionally, review the worksheets for the following week. Select and print 5 required worksheets for distribution to the learners.
  • Review the progress of the learners.

In-Class Management

  • Sign-In - Use the blackboard (or a piece of paper taped to the blackboard) to have each attendee sign in. This list will also be used to mark the number of correct words spelled by each attendee.
  • Start Spelling Bee - This can be student led. Call attendee to the front of the room. Select a flash card and ask the attendee to spell the work. Optionally, require a sentence using the word. If spelled correctly, allow the learner to place a checkmark next to their name on the sign-in list. Ask the learner to sit down.
  • Ending Class - Distribute optional worksheets. Select drill master for the coming week.

This interactive appoach keeps the classroom busy and minimizes behavioral problems.
